Embarking on this blog signifies my intent to share the unfolding narrative of my endeavour to kickstart my career in Australia right after graduating from University.
The decision to relocate to Australia, while monumental, revealed unexpected disparities in the industry compared to my experiences in the UK. Utilizing foundational networking strategies during my initial two months secured me the role of an Event and Conference Manager at a distinguished pub/hotel venue in Sydney. This marked the beginning of my dedication to showcasing my capabilities and making a meaningful impact in the role.
Despite contentment with the working hours, a longing for career progression prompted doubt. My desire to fully embrace the unique lifestyle and opportunities that Australia offers became a driving force for change.
I acknowledged significant differences in the Australian event scene, which prompted me to research to understand the differences compared to the UK.
I discovered that the industry's gross value in Australia is 17 billion, compared to the UK's 20.6 billion, highlighting not only financial disparities but also a gap in consistent platforms for Event Professionals, indicating potential developmental distinctions.
My working holiday visa added a layer of complexity to job applications. While the removal of the 6-month employment rule in my industry provided relief from a regulatory perspective, concerns lingered regarding the visa's susceptibility to changes, contributing to employer apprehension.
Australia's distinctive work-life balance, manifested in earlier venue closures and stringent event regulations, offered a unique perspective. Financial variations in event spending, exemplified by the average Australian wedding cost of 34 thousand dollars compared to the UK's 20 thousand GBP, enriched my understanding of the industry landscape.
A fortuitous turn of events transpired when an esteemed events venue, having come across my CV, extended an invitation for an interview. The realization of this opportunity, previously envisioned during my job search struggles, culminated in an offered role that I could not resist.
Anticipate the forthcoming blog, where I dive into the chapters of my journey within a historic venue nestled in a national park. I am excited for the prospect of change and I eagerly look forward to sharing my journey in my new role.
